Fake bombs over Miami Beach

December 20, 2013 Posted by Frank M

Miami Beach Police responded to two false bomb threats today.

The first one involved a homeowner who thought he found a live grenade in box in his garage. The area of 44th Street and Royal Palm Avenue was blocked off for hours as police worked the scene.

According to a report by WSVN, a police dog offered a faulty positive read on the package.

“We immediately cordoned off the area to vehicular and pedestrian traffic,” said PIO Bobby Hernandez to the television station.

Ultimately it turned out to be a novelty toy.

At the Astor Hotel, someone called in a bomb threat. Nothing was found.

State Rep. David Richardson’s remarks on the MBCC

December 18, 2013 Posted by Frank M

State Rep. David Richardson addressed the City Commission on Dec. 11, the following are his remarks on the Miami Beach Convention Center:

The convention center, over the last year I’ve been very quiet about that because I am very very respectful that I am a state representative and I was not elected to be a commissioner or a mayor. I’ve sent my staff to keep me informed. I was not endorsing or supporting either project that was before this project that was before this body.

Miami Beach will look into Trolley system for Alton Road

December 11, 2013 Posted by Frank M

The Miami Beach City Commission asked the administration to look into a trolley that would operate through Alton Road during the year-long construction; the hope being that the system would bring much needed traffic to Alton Road businesses who have seen a decline.

City Manager Jimmy Morales said he would look into it, and bring a possible contract to the January commission meeting.

Initially the route was planned to go up and down the desolated artery of commerce of Alton, but some interjected that it should go down south of fifth.

The grander the route, presumably the more expensive it should get.

The commission also spit-balled other ways they could help those businesses including giving away free advertising in the city’s publications. Another idea was to waive city fees, but those applicable would be of minimum help.

Mayor Philip Levine claims mandate and presents goals

November 25, 2013 Posted by Frank M

Newly sworn in, Mayor Philip Levine wasted no time on Monday to claim a mandate from the public and outline his goals for the coming term.

“I was humbled by the 14% margin of victory and the mandate without a runoff that you the people of Miami Beach gave me,” he said during his inaugural speech. “You didn’t whisper about change you shouted.”

“I have to listen to that, we have to listen to that loud voice. And I pledge to follow your clear mandate,” said the mayor.

Levine beat his chief rival, Then-Commissioner Michael Gongora, 50.48% to 36.4% during the November 4th General Election. All other races went to a runoff election two weeks later.

Now elected, Levine outlined a list of “very-important issues” he would like to tackle right away.

Flooding:

Levine wants to create a new standing sub-committee to tackle the issue. Commissioners, he says, would devise “short, medium, and long-term solutions” to the ever present flooding problem.

Miami Beach Convention Center:
“We all agree, we may not need something so mass, something so large,” said Levine. “But I think we all agree that this convention center must be renovated, must be state of the art.”

Miami Beach votes out incumbents in runoff

November 19, 2013 Posted by Frank M

image

The incumbents are out.

Miami Beach voters have chosen to go a different direction, electing Joy Malakoff and Michael Grieco over Mayor Matti Bower and Commissioner Jorge Exposito.  Two weeks ago, voters choose Philip Levine over Commissioner Michael Gongora.

Micky Steinberg was also elected in an open seat over Elsa Urquiza.

About 16% of registered voters turned out for the runoff election, with 7,239 ballots cast.

The most surprising result involved the unknown Malakoff defeating the well-known Bower with nearly 60% of the vote. After initial defeats, Bower became a powerhouse at the polls, winning 14 years of office. Those many years of service were probably what did in Bower, more than Malakoff’s campaigning. Bower was the figurehead at City Hall during one of the most turbulent times in Miami Beach history.

Even the most apathetic of voters, which Beach voters are NOT, need at least one election cycle and weak challengers to forget such negative headlines.

Exposito didn’t fare so well either, earning 46.33% of the vote in the runoff. That’s only a point higher than he received during the general election. Grieco seems to have picked up Dave Crystal’s supporters. Or as Crystal may fume, Grieco picked up his. (And his talking points, Crystal has said.)

Of course Levine’s figurehead-candidacy, money, and endorsements of most of his fellow Custin-Candidates played a big role in exposure and a call to action for voters towards the like-minded Malakoff and Grieco.

Levine did not endorse fellow Custin-Candidate Urquiza, nor included her in a publicized ‘friend-raiser.’ She told Newshole[DOT]info that she has never been part of a so-called slate or part of any Hispanic vs anti-Hispanic campaigning.

“I stand on my track record, service and experience,”said Urquiza.

Urquiza lost to Steinberg 46.94% to 53.06%.

Editors note: posts are being made from a cell phone with a dying battery, mostly on the road.

7:00 pm A group of sign holders at the botanical gardens sight take off like if that bird from the Flintstones just had his tail pulled.

Candidates follow suit. Gongora, Malakoff, Greigco, Abramson all hang it up for the night.

A group of young males wearing red ‘Firefighters of Miami Beach shirts’ walk with purpose away from the polling place. One of them hisses and declares: ”I wouldnt vote for any of them.”

image

They disappear off into the distance before we can snap a pic.

The group was holding signs for thr incumbents, but it sounded like the venom was directed to everyone.

7:04 The majority are gone. From what once was a solid brush of sign holders – where voters had to navigate a labyrinth of sign holders just to get by- is now a loose collection of stray people resembling in the middle loitering than campaigning.

7:07 Everyone is gone, better leave than get a ticket.

7:55.Still only have the absentee numbers, so here we go:

SunPost: Millions at stake says MBCCAB

Advisory Board Warns Miami Beach It Will Lose $390 Million if Miami Beach Convention Center Plan is Scrapped.

The Miami Beach Convention Center Advisory Board announced this week that Miami Beach stands to lose $390 million dollars if the current renovation plans for the center are scrapped.

Chairman of the Board Stu Blumberg said the city has on the books tentative agreements that represent real tangible money, and warned it would go up in smoke if the city moved away from developing the 52-acre lot.

The meeting was called a day before the city’s October Commission Meeting, and in response to the commission asking the administration to look into ‘alternatives’ after the project hit a detour in the courts.

“We are a little bit frustrated about the lack of information regarding this center,” said Blumberg, “and more so the misinformation.”

With the ballot question struck from this November’s election because it did not include a finished agreement between the city and the developer, the project gets delayed and opponents get more time to poke at the aging center. None of the most vocal opponents to the project were present at the meeting.

“Our biggest critics are not in the room. That speaks volumes,” said Blumberg.

Commissioner Jonah Wolfson, backed with money from the Fontainebleau -themselves a failed bidder of the MBCC project-, has lead a campaign against the project. He even successfully put a question on this year’s ballot that would raise a potentially raise the passing of a referendum on public land from a simple majority to 60% of the vote.

If it passes it adds another difficult hurdle for the project. This lead the advisory board to rhetorically ask the commission, as none were present when the question was asked, does the city want to be in the convention center business?

“It’s not complicated, because if the city doesn’t wish to be in the business…then don’t talk about a renovation and don’t talk about a hotel,” said the chairman.
